Request for Disclosure of the Japanese Name of Mr. Yong Chol Gu

We are members of a private social group called “Hashima Island Residents in Pursuit of True History” (hereinafter will be referred to as “this Association”).

The purpose of this Association—composed of Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture (hereinafter will be referred to as “Hashima Island”), their descendants and relatives as members—is to confirm the true history of Hashima Island and to hand down the real life of Hashima Island to future generations through former island residents who worked or lived on Hashima Island until it became uninhabited in 1974. In addition, this Association also aims to disseminate the real life of the former island residents of Hashima Island to people at home and abroad, based on the facts that they themselves have experienced and the materials that they possess.

Now, your company has aired an interview with Mr. Gu Yong Chol (hereinafter will be referred to as Mr. Gu) in the TV program titled “The Spotlight of Lee Kyu-yeon on the Japan Conference.” In the interview, Mr. Gu described a number of tragic experiences that he had on Hashima Island during the war, as well as his words and deeds that have been disclosed to the public, and when Mr. Gu was shown a video in which members of this Association (former island residents) were denied his words and deeds, he demanded a face-to-face meeting with members of this Association, claiming that the members of this Association were making false statements.

The members of this Association (former island residents) who are of the same generation as Mr. Gu would like to have a face-to-face meeting with him in an environment that is fair and neutral to both parties. However, we have no idea from the photos of Mr. Gu and the videos including the above-mentioned program (there is no scene in which Mr. Gu utters even a single word of Japanese), and since most of his words and deeds in regards to Hashima Island are contrary to the facts, we have serious doubts in terms of his presence on Hashima Island during the war.

Therefore, we would like you to confirm with Mr. Gu the Japanese name that he used during the war, and send your answer to the following attorney-at-law representing this Association.

Sincerely,

(Contact information for this letter)
