“Who were the Victims of Gunkanjima?”

Leaders would save their workers first.

A major German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, reported “over a thousand Chinese and Korean forced workers died on the island of Hashima and their bodies were thrown into abandoned shafts or the sea”. Hashima, so-called Gunkanjima, is one of “Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution” UNESCO World Heritage sites. We would like to share the response of Hashima Islanders with the world.
